Yah Ribon Olam

This song, usually grouped among those for Friday night, is a Shabbat favorite even though its content is not Shabbat-specific. This popular rendition of Rabbi Israel Najara’s Aramaic poem from 16th-century Safed and Damascus is performed by its composer, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach (1925–1994). The refrain: “God, Sovereign of all worlds, You are… King of Kings. It is fitting that Your mighty deeds and wonders be recounted.” See below for the original Aramaic text. A version of the text with English translation and transliteration can be seen here, where “Yah” has been replaced by “Kah” to avoid profaning a divine name.
