The chorus of the song concludes with the line “And everyone is blessed by the shabbos angels,” referring to the two angels that come to every Jewish home on Friday night and either bless or curse the home that next week will look as it does this week, according to the Talmud. As a way to greet and bid farewell to these angels, Kabbalists (Jewish mystics) of the 17th Century introduced the recitation of the Shalom Aleichem liturgy to the Shabbat evening rituals.
